What is Japanese anime?

Anime is Japanese animation, the name of which comes from the word アニメ (short for “animation”). This particular art form has a recognizable style: large expressive eyes, bright hair colors, and detailed backgrounds. 

Although it is a type of animation, far from being limited to children's stories, anime is a full-fledged cultural phenomenon with unique aesthetics and deep scenarios. Actually, unlike Western cartoons, anime caters to viewers of all ages and covers a variety of genres. In anime you can find both light comedies and romantic stories, and complex psychological dramas, sci-fi, fantasy and horror. Often it touches on serious and adult themes, raising questions of ethics, philosophy, self-development, as well as social and political problems.

Anime plots are often based on manga - Japanese comic books, so many popular manga get screen adaptations in the format of anime series. However, even if an anime begins as an adaptation of a manga, its story can be significantly different and develop along a completely new path.

Shonen - Tales of Young Heroes

Shonen is a genre aimed at teenage boys, so it is based on dynamic plots filled with action, battles and competitive spirit; where the main characters are young characters who dream of great accomplishments. They go through difficulties, overcome weaknesses and become stronger, so the themes of friendship, support and teamwork take center stage, as the characters rarely act alone - their friends become a second family to them.

Shoujo - Romance and Emotions

This is an anime aimed at girls, where the focus is on romantic relationships, emotions and experiences. The main themes are school life, first love, friendship and inner feelings; regardless, at the same time, adventure and magic may be present in the story, but they are presented through the prism of romance and personal relationships.

Seinen - Mature Stories for Men

Seinen is intended for adult male audiences and often deals with more serious and darker themes. Realism, brutality and deep philosophical questions become an important part of the narrative; while characters face moral dilemmas, internal conflicts and difficult decisions. Hentai (Jap. “変態” - literally “perversion” or “deviation”) is a term for animation and manga with explicit sex scenes and erotic content. In Western culture, the word is associated exclusively with pornographic anime and manga, but in Japan it can refer to any non-standard sexual preferences and fantasies.

• Studio Ghibli is the studio founded by the iconic director Hayao Miyazaki, known for his legendary works such as “Gone with the Ghosts ‘ and ’Princess Mononoke”. The films of this studio are famous for their breathtaking animation, touching stories and attention to detail.

• Madhouse is a famous studio specializing in creating deep, sometimes gloomy works. Among the most famous works are the psychological thriller “Perfect Sadness ‘ and the cult hit ’Death Notebook”. The studio often tackles complex themes and creates multi-layered stories.
